  • Purple Pen Competition 2018: The Institute of Certified Indexers has opened the application period for its 2018 competition for best new indexer, The Purple Pen Award. The award is open to new indexers who completed an indexing course in the last five years (January 1, 2013 to January 1, 2018) and submit an index done for payment (not a practice or pro bono index). Each entrant will receive a detailed feedback report compiled from the comments of three ICI-member judges.
    The standards for the anonymous judging come from the ICI  Best Practices.
    Candidates for the contest must read the rules and complete the submission form included at the end of the rules document.
    Deadline for submissions is July 31, 2018 midnight EST. Application must be accompanied by the fee of $40. Only one submission is accepted per entrant.

  • Upcoming Events: Embedded indexing: tips and techniques, software programs, and best practices interactive workshop at the Western New York Chapter Fall Meeting of the American Society for Indexing (ASI), September 8, 2018, Tompkins County Public Library (tcpl.org) Borg Warner East Room, Ithaca, NY. I will provide some demonstrations and there will be plenty of time for questions. Bring your laptop so you can really participate and get some hands-on learning with me. Questions?   • Upcoming Events: Indexing in Digital Environments with the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Society for Indexing in Vancouver, WA September 15, 2018. I’ll discuss indexing for digital publications, giving an overview of the current state of the field and the software, skills, and training that indexers need to work in it. We will also glimpse into future possibilities and trends. We’ll continue with a panel of indexers who are working in different digital environments, including Jan Wright, Sam Arnold-Boyd, and other local professionals.
  • The AMA Manual of Style, 10th Edition, a superb guide for authors and editors is available online. I highly recommend this editorial manual, especially for Chapter 13, Medical Indexes.
