  • Purple Pen Competition 2018: The Institute of Certified Indexers has opened the application period for its 2018 competition for best new indexer, The Purple Pen Award. The award is open to new indexers who completed an indexing course in the last five years (January 1, 2013 to January 1, 2018) and submit an index done for payment (not a practice or pro bono index). Each entrant will receive a detailed feedback report compiled from the comments of three ICI-member judges.
    The standards for the anonymous judging come from the ICI  Best Practices.
    Candidates for the contest must read the rules and complete the submission form included at the end of the rules document.
    Deadline for submissions is July 31, 2018 midnight EST. Application must be accompanied by the fee of $40. Only one submission is accepted per entrant.

I’ll discuss indexing for digital publications, giving an overview of the current state of the field and the software, skills, and training that indexers need to work in it. We will also glimpse into future possibilities and trends. We’ll continue with a panel of indexers who are working in different digital environments, including Jan Wright, Sam Arnold-Boyd, and other local professionals.
  • Index Manager (Idx) is now available in English. This modern, professional tool for indexing and seamlessly embedding indexes into core documents is especially useful for digital editions. It’s also great for indexing any MS Word- or Adobe InDesign-based publications. Write the index while finishing your core documents, embed accurately and easily, and then smoothly export for print or electronic editions. Highlights include “Indexing with Index Manager: Indexing and Embedding the Forest and the Trees,” a workshop with Pilar Wyman and Katharina Munk; a panel session “How to be the Interface between Publishers and Digital Indexing techniques” with Terry Casey, Jan Wright, and Pilar Wyman; and a dedicated software demo with Cindex, Index Manager, Macrex, and Sky.

  • Want to learn more about indexes in ebooks? Join me and fellow book indexers @WIndexing (Jan Wright) and @PC_Bain (Paula Bain) for a Twitter  hour on for ebooks on Wednesday 31st January, 11am ET, 4pm GMT. We’ll discuss digital, embedded, and linked indexes and how to make them better. That is, we’re going to discuss how to actually make indexes in digital books work. Why do they so often not link? How to get publishers to take the teeny weeny extra step and make them work? We provide the code, but more often than not these days the indexes in ebooks are flat reproductions (if that) of print edition indexes. Readers expect and need them to link and take us into the text. Let’s make it happen! Join us.
